Cabécar

The Cabécar language is spoken in the canton of Buenos Aires, in the province of Puntarenas, and in the canton of Talamanca, in the province of Limón. Two large geographical varieties are recognized: the southern variety (towns of Ujarrás and San José Cabécar) and the northern variety (regions of Chirripó and La Estrella) (Margery 1989). This language belongs to the Isthmic group, Western Isthmic branch, Viceitic subbranch, of the Chibcha family (Constenla 2008). According to data from the 2011 National Population Census, 87.6% of the population of the official territories (about 11,133 individuals) speak the language. Based on the parameters of UNESCO and according to the information available for each region, Cabécar can be classified as safe, in the villages of Talamanca, and as definitely endangered, in the villages of Buenos Aires (Sánchez 2013).
